Private knowledge, though, isn't going to do it. The yogi in the forest, the inventor in a garret, the explorer who never returns may be interesting people. But they don't further the progress of knowledge or human life. Knowledge is nothing without memory and communication. I did love my Christmas present book for the pictures, but it turns out that I loved the scent of the ink more. Although I continued my education in the fine arts in college, with classes in painting and drawing, I spent as much time making posters and flyers for student rallies and neighborhood groups, clean water meetings and a dozen other volunteer organizations. When I graduated, a good friend offered me a job doing pasteup work for an underground newspaper. I was a bona fide professional commercial artist. |
